Treasurer Talks About New Postmark Rules

Dodge County Treasurer Kris Keith says that a recent U.S. Postal Service (USPS) rule change means that mail being sent outside the 50 mile radius from a regional processing center (Milwaukee or Minneapolis) will not be postmarked when the post office receives but will be postmarked a day or two later when it is processed at the facility.

Wisconsin law dictates that mailed tax payments are timely only if postmarked on or before the due date. Keith emphasizes to taxpayers relying on those postmarks that “it’s more important than ever to walk your mail into the post office and ask for a hand-stamped postmark at the counter.” She says this is the only way to ensure your mailed payment will be timely.
