Seasonal Maintenance

The Dodge County Highway Department works year-round to ensure that all county roadways are safe and drivable. During cold months, our department is focused on snow removal and winter driving safety. During the warmer months, the department works on making necessary updates like signage, traffic markings and mowing. Plowing

The department roster is sized to provide winter snow and ice control on these highways. Typically, 50 - 55 trucks and up to 10 graders are dispatched for a snow removal operation to service the State, and County highway systems. In addition to these routes, Dodge County contracts snow removal for four towns.

Hours of coverage during storms vary by class of road.

Class 1 roads receive 24-hour service. Class 1 roads are I 41, USH 151, STH 60 from STH 67 to Hartford, STH 26 from STH 60 to Watertown, and STH 33 from Beaver Dam to the east county line.

Class 2 roads receive coverage from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Class 2 roads are STH 73 from STH 33 to Columbus, STH 33 from STH 73 to Beaver Dam, STH 16/60 and 60 from Columbus to STH 67, STH 26 from STH 60 to Waupun, and all of STH 68, 175, 28, 67, and 49.

All County roads receive coverage from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

During the summer the county refreshes traffic markings on the highways. Our crew travels at only 10-12 miles per hour and has signs mounted on the trucks to inform the public of "WET YELLOW PAINT" or "WET WHITE PAINT".

Some drivers try to get around our convoy and track over the wet lines, splattering paint onto their vehicles. When that happens, the drivers usually call us to solve the problem. Therefore, the County is not responsible for paint removal from vehicles that cross these lines.

Paint used by Dodge County to paint yellow roadway centerlines and white edge lines is a waterborne acrylic and can be removed with a solution of hot water and ammonia (one cup ammonia per gallon of water) and soap.

The area with paint on may have to be soaked multiple times until the paint softens so it can be wiped clean and rinsed. Our paint trucks are cleaned by this same process each fall. Paint should be removed as soon as possible.

Herbicide Application

Invasive species within the road right-of-way and adjacent properties can pose significant health risks to highway workers, utility workers, emergency responders, and anyone else utilizing the right-of-way. In spring and summer months, you may notice our crews spraying these areas to help control and eradicate Wild Parsnip and other harmful invasive weed species.

Our staff has been trained and certified in applying EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) certified herbicides. These herbicides are plant specific and won’t hurt native plants. This means grasses, milkweed, and other native plants will flourish, helping our wildlife and pollinators.
